Posted: July 21, 2019 by Alan Tucker

Real estate agents are constantly working to improve their relationship with their clients and working hard to ensure that all of their client’s home buying and selling needs are taken care of! That said, have you ever wondered about a few things that you can do as the client to further improve your relationship with your agent and help yourself in the process? If so, then look no further than these helpful tips: first, understand that communication is crucial in real estate, and be sure to let your agent know how you’d like to communicate! Second, understand the things that you want in your new home versus what you need in your new home, and make sure that you let your agent know what those things are! Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, ask questions!

Communication is Key

As with any relationship, the relationship between client and real estate agent is one that revolves around good communication. As such, one of the first things that you should do with your agent is establish how you prefer to communicate. For example, is it easier for you to correspond via text or over the phone? Do you prefer email? Are face-to-face meetings something you want to have and if so, how frequently? These may seem like basic things to understand, but you’d be surprised by how many clients overlook the importance of establishing these guidelines! After all, if your agent comes across a home or potential buyer that is the perfect fit, you don’t want to miss out because you never established these guidelines!

Ensure that your Agent knows your Wants and Needs

If you’re looking to buy a new home, your agent will be working tirelessly to ensure that they find homes that match what you’re looking for! However, this goes beyond just understanding things like location and price range! You need to understand what things you absolutely must have in a new home, and other things that you want, but could live without. This information is meant to help your agent prioritize certain homes over others, and make the homebuying process as smooth as possible for you! Don’t be afraid to be specific in what you’re looking for in a home—your agent will work to find what you want, just trust them!

Ask Questions

It may seem obvious, but your real estate agent is an expert in the real estate field, and their breadth of knowledge is certain to be impressive. As such, never be afraid to ask your agent a question about anything that comes to mind concerning real estate. Whether it’s a question about the location of a home, the price, certain features that the home does or does not have, your agent will have the knowledge to help you! You’d be amazed how many times clients will elect to not ask a question or questions and end up without a key piece of knowledge. Your agent will share all of the important things that you need to know—and then some—but never be afraid to ask them to go over things that you don’t understand or expand upon a point that they’ve made!
