The city is a vibrant and ever-growing area that boasts attractions for every member of the family, and the city itself has quite a rich history! In addition, the city has a long and proud affiliation with the military, and is home to Fort Bragg, which is one of the largest military installments in the world! Lastly, the city is more than just a great place to spend a day, and its wide array of regular events, festivals, and unique attractions makes it an even better place to live!
The History of Fayetteville
The area that is now Fayetteville was first settled in the 18th century by Scottish settlers as they made their way up the Cape Fear River, eventually settling in the area they called Cross Creek. This settlement of Cross Creek would soon merge with nearby Campbellton to form the city Fayetteville, named for Revolutionary War Hero Marquis de Lafayette, in 1783! As you can imagine, this means that Fayetteville’s history is one which is greatly appreciated and celebrated in the city itself, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the city’s iconic market house! This particular building is Fayetteville’s lone national historic landmark and acted as both a market and town hall for the city until 1907. The building now houses a museum on the upper floor which details the history of the downtown area!
The City’s Military Ties
The city of Fayetteville has long been synonymous with the military due to the presence of Fort Bragg, which was established in 1918 as artillery base before later housing airborne and special operations units as it does today! Any visit to the city of Fayetteville is not complete without observing some of this military history, and there are numerous places to do just that in the city! One such place is Veteran’s Park, located just outside the main hub of downtown Fayetteville! This park is meant to honor military veterans from all branches of service, and houses a number of monuments and memorials! In addition, the park also houses the local Airborne museum which details some fascinating history of our armed forces! In addition, one could also spend some time in the JFK Special Warfare Museum, which is housed within Fort Bragg itself! This particular museum details the history behind the Green Berets, as well as history about the Special Forces as a whole!

The thing that really makes Fayetteville unique and a wonderful place to live is the experience that downtown Fayetteville provides! The city itself is full of locally owned and operated restaurants and businesses, as well a unique storefronts! In addition, the city boasts a number of regular events and festivals that are always a hit with both locals and visitors alike! The monthly Fourth Friday event offers a unique, themed experience to those in the city and it’s a great way to get out and experience Fayetteville! In addition, the city has its famous Dogwood festivals which boasts a number of attractions, as well as live music and plenty of local food and drink to enjoy it with!
