Making the Most of your Winter Remodel

Posted: February 06, 2019 by Alan Tucker

The winter is often the season least associated with remodeling and renovating your home, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t take advantage of the season and make some home improvements! First, it may seem obvious but, depending on where you live, it can be very difficult to take up any projects that include outdoor touch-ups or renovations. With that said, while your landscaping goals will have to wait for the warmer weather of spring, the winter is the perfect time to make interior improvements! Contractors are often not as busy during the winter, which means that you may be able to get a better price and the project with be finished faster! In addition, building supplies are often cheaper in the winter due to less demand!
Start Indoors

While the cold weather may limit your ability to accomplish your outdoor projects, you’ll be happy that you accomplished your indoor projects first! Is there a room that needs a remodel? A space that needs an add-on or a reconfiguration? These are all projects that can certainly be time-consuming, and getting them done when you’ll be spending a lot of time indoors anyway is a great way to both get ahead of the curve and stave off that cabin fever! In addition, when the warmth of spring does come and you’re planning your various outdoor projects, you’ll appreciate the fact that you accomplished your indoor renovations ahead of time!

Contractors may be More Available

Given that the winter is the offseason for most contractors, you may find that they’ll be more readily available due to the lighter workload! In addition, while you’ll obviously want to hire a contractor with good reviews and a history of good service, you’ll be even more likely to receive good service during the winter because the contractor will almost certainly have fewer projects going on! As such, less work means that they’ll be more focused on your project to provide you with all that you need! In addition, if you have a project that you want to plan for the spring, contacting a contractor during the winter is a great way to ensure that you’re ahead of schedule and that the work that you’re offering isn’t turned away due to a busy schedule!

You can get a Great Price on Materials

In addition to contractors being more readily available, you’ll often find that the various building materials that you need to accomplish your project will be cheaper in the winter! This can be attributed to simple supply and demand, as many builders will be pushing back major projects until the spring! Also, even if the project you’re planning isn’t something you’ll start until the spring, you can still buy materials ahead of time and store them due to the better prices! Just make sure you store products like lumber and paint correctly—after all, a ruined product is no use no matter how good the price was!
