Renovating your Home During the Winter

Posted: November 14, 2018 by Alan Tucker

Often times the winter is a time when homeowners retreat into the warmth of their homes and leave the big home improvement projects until the warmer months of spring. However, while there are unique challenges to renovating in the winter, it’s a great time to get ahead of certain improvements that you want to make to your home! For that reason, you should be aware of the advantages of renovating your home in the winter!
Contractor Availability

As you might imagine, contractors usually have better availability during the winter because many homeowners don’t plan on renovations until the spring. In addition, contractors who have more available time in their schedules are also able to give you more of their time! While any skilled contractor is able to produce excellent work on a tight schedule, it doesn’t hurt to have a contractor with additional time on their hands! In addition, most contractors typically spend a majority of their time in the winter on interior projects and then transition to more outdoor projects in the warmer months of spring. As such, this is something to keep in mind when planning your renovation!

Manufacturer Prices are Better in the Winter

With renovations being less common in the winter, you may find that prices on the materials you need for your home improvement are lower than they would be at other times of the year! In addition, there are often clear-out sales on various materials and appliances, so you may find that your winter renovation is incredibly cost-effective!
In addition, it’s also important to note that, while various materials may be cheaper during the winter months, they may also be less abundant. This is not to say that you won’t be able to find what you need, but don’t be surprised if you end up waiting on an order for certain materials to arrive!

For certain projects that you plan on for your home, you may need to acquire certain permits before work can begin! That said, those in charge of approving and distributing such permits are often not as busy during the winter, and thus you may find the process of obtaining your permits to be quicker! That said, do remember that the holiday season is a huge part of the winter months, so don’t be surprised if permits requested during the holiday season end up taking a bit longer!
